Top-down, fastest first: grant the OS microphone permission (Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone, allow desktop apps; Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → Teams), select the mic by name under Settings → Devices, prove the loop with Make a test call, and for too-quiet: raise the OS input level — Teams transmits what the OS hands it.

1. Clear the OS gate first

Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone → enable access and Let desktop apps access your microphone.

Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → toggle Microsoft Teams on, then fully relaunch Teams.

Why this works: an install-day denial persists silently forever, and nothing inside Teams overrides it — which is why it's checked first, especially on Macs where the prompt appears exactly once.

2. Choose the device by name and prove it

Settings → Devices → Microphone: pick your actual hardware, never trust post-docking defaults.
Speak — the level indicator should track you.
Make a test call: record after the tone, listen back. That playback is exactly what colleagues get.

Why this works: every dongle and webcam registers a mic and the newest arrival often steals default; the test call exercises capture, processing and network in one honest loop.

3. Fix quiet at the gain, not the app

Windows: Settings → System → Sound → your mic → raise Input volume while watching the meter.

Mac: System Settings → Sound → Input → raise Input volume, speaking at normal distance.

Why this works: Teams doesn't amplify weak capture. Boom rotated away, foam full of lint, or an inline volume wheel at 30% all masquerade as software faults — glance at the physical mic too.

4. Break device contention

Quit other capture apps (Zoom, OBS, recorders) and rejoin.
Bluetooth audio playing but mic dead? Re-pair — the hands-free profile failed to engage.
After driver/OS updates, restart Teams so devices re-enumerate.

Why this works: exclusive capture and half-attached Bluetooth both present as connected-but-silent; releasing and re-acquiring resets the chain.
