Teams Mic Not Working (or Too Quiet): The Ordered Diagnostic
Top-down, fastest first: grant the OS microphone permission (Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone, allow desktop apps; Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → Teams), select the mic by name under Settings → Devices, prove the loop with Make a test call, and for too-quiet: raise the OS input level — Teams transmits what the OS hands it.
1. Clear the OS gate first
Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone → enable access and Let desktop apps access your microphone.
Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → toggle Microsoft Teams on, then fully relaunch Teams.
2. Choose the device by name and prove it
- Settings → Devices → Microphone: pick your actual hardware, never trust post-docking defaults.
- Speak — the level indicator should track you.
- Make a test call: record after the tone, listen back. That playback is exactly what colleagues get.
Working but the room's loud?
This desk's last step when Teams audio settings run out: put Krisp between the mic and the client. It's the difference between tuning one app and cleaning the whole machine — and the free tier is a real plan, not a demo.

Windows: Settings → System → Sound → your mic → raise Input volume while watching the meter.
Mac: System Settings → Sound → Input → raise Input volume, speaking at normal distance.
4. Break device contention
- Quit other capture apps (Zoom, OBS, recorders) and rejoin.
- Bluetooth audio playing but mic dead? Re-pair — the hands-free profile failed to engage.
- After driver/OS updates, restart Teams so devices re-enumerate.
Still stuck?
- Test call fine, meetings silent? Check organiser mutes and hard-mute buttons on the headset.
- Dies daily mid-call? USB selective suspend — disable it in power options.
- Everything fails only in Teams? Clear the Teams cache before considering reinstall.
Quick answers
Why does my mic work in Zoom but not Teams?
Separate OS permission entries and separate device pickers. Verify the privacy list includes Teams, then Teams' own Devices selection.
Where is the test call in new Teams?
Settings → Devices → Make a test call. If your tenant hides it, a meeting with yourself is the workable substitute.
